Have I Mentioned How Much I Love This Book?

Honestly. This is the best thing I've picked up in a long time. Tony Woodlief has 4 small boys - and that alone earns him a high-five - but he also writes about the simple, beautiful insanity of ordinary family life in a way that is pure artistry. I had to include a passage that totally cracked me up today. Enjoy:

You want to know why people who have raised children are more likely to vote for conservatives as they grow older? Because when you have worn yourself to the bone civilizing a pack of beasts whom you were bound by law to let live with you, and along comes some smooth-talking, blow-dried elitist talking about change, you get an involuntary shudder.

It's something akin to post-traumatic stress disorder, with the elfin voices from your past resurfacing: Look, Mom, I cut my own hair. Hey Dad, I reset all the stations on your radio. Mom, Dad, why can't we go somewhere cool to eat for a change? By the time your children are grown, you've had just about enough change, already, by golly, and the last thing you need is one more well-intentioned wiseguy shaking things up with his clever ideas.

This is why I prefer politicians who look too tired to make any trouble.

Life Lessons on a Bike Ride

How many hours till bedtime???
Aaron is in Minneapolis listening to Governor Pawlenty wax eloquently at a Heritage Foundation event. I am here with four freshly bathed children who are on the slow journey to bedtime.

It's usually my goal to completely exhaust my children throughout the day when Aaron is gone so they'll go to bed without any cries of outrage, but it never quite seems to work. But one boy will sleep hard - this sunny boy we call Jonny.

JR just learned to ride without training wheels and still struggles to really get going on his own. His bike being the smallest, he has to spin his legs like crazy to keep up with the rest of us. But I always stay back, ride next to him, and try to encourage him as he learns.

Tonight I didn't think he'd make it. I'd ambitiously thought we'd go all the way to Dairy Queen which is a long haul, but knew we had plenty of time. J. did great on the way there, but on the way back, after the sugar spike, he just melted like a slushie left on a hot sidewalk.

"I CAN'T DO IT!!!!!" he yelled, he whined, he exclaimed. We stopped.

"Jonathan, you just have to keep pedaling. We can't keep stopping or we'll never get home."

He would take a deep breath, pout hugely for effect, and pedal. And pedal. Aaaaand stop.

"I'M TOO HOT!!!! MY KNEES HURT!!!!" Now he's just plain mad.

"See the trees up ahead? That's where the shade is!! It's cooler there and you CAN. DO. IT."

Somehow, we finally made it home. And I was reminded how often I whine to my dear Father (usually around this time at night, actually) I cannot do this. You were crazy to give me 4 children. They will never become more than barbarians.

And he tells me, Just keep pedaling, Jeannie, just keep pedaling.

From the Bleachers

This new blog design is driving me nuts, I must say. I can't get pictures to post in a visually cohesive way, which equals torment for this blogger.
But here you are - G-man's first game of the summer, a blessedly warm night, good times.

Greg played shortstop and pitcher, had one RBI, and thoroughly enjoyed himself. It was fun to watch his exuberance for the game! And his goofy expressions for the camera:

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Official Traile...

Random Stuff on my Brain

- VBS -

We are finishing up a week of Vacation Bible School here at our church. I have been the Bible Storyteller for the kids and it's been fun to adapt each day to how each group responds/doesn't respond. Great preparation for teaching, even though the ages aren't the same.

I forget how much energy it takes to present something to a group of kids -- and how much fun it is. For me, at least. Well, one day wasn't so fun. I made a 4-year old cry when I talked about how Paul could have died from a snake bite in the book of Acts. Guess I got a little animated with my story....

But I can't help but think of all those dear ladies who worked at VBS for years when I was a kid. What saints. What angels. Wherever you are - I thank you.

- Boys -

All my boys need right now for a great summer is water. Yesterday, they played with the garden hose for almost an hour. The grass was a bit mutilated, but their laughter made up for it.

Also, a great speech from the G-man on the way to VBS this morning: "You know why I'm NEVER gettin' married? I want my OWN car, my OWN house, and no BORING kids or a BORING wife." I immediately wrote it down and plan to bring it to his wedding reception where I will read it with great pleasure someday. Dear God, please save my son from himself. Amen.

Has anyone tried Gold Peak Tea? It's made by Coca-Cola and it's in some fast-food restaurants now. But my favorite is to hit Casey's Convenience Store to grab a bottle of Diet Gold Peak Tea. I'm not kidding - I've never had better tea. I've searched all my life to find sweet tea that tasted like the kind my Grandpa made when I was a kid - liquid candy. And glory be, I think I've found it.

The Books of (early) Summer

When summer hits, I go a little bonky trying to find books my boys will love and read on their own. I so desperately want them to fall in love with reading at an early age, and the only way to do that is to just fill my home with possibilities. Yeah, that's me lugging a suitcase out of the public library...

One of the book series Greg has loved is called Knights of the Lunch Table by Frank Cammuso. This is what's called a "Graphic Novel" because it's like a big fat comic book. He loves the extreme visual with funny school stories.

I also found some old Calvin & Hobbes collections at Barnes & Noble for the way-cheap, and Greg especially loves those.

I have also found these websites helpful for boys-n-books: www.guysread.com and www.booksforboys.com

If you have any children in your house ages 4-9, go get yoself some Mercy Watson books RIGHT NOW!! My kids have LOVED Mercy Watson for a long time. Written by one of my favorite authors, Kate DiCamillo, it's a six book series about a beloved pig who gets into all kinds of monkeyshines. Good times.

And those illustrations - oh man, they are The Best. I have to admit, my favorite thing about Mercy Watson books is they lend themselves to doing hilarious voices. I really should have gone into voice-overs...

What are your kids reading this summer? Do tell!

When You Dream....

I grabbed this book at the library recently, just because I thought Aaron would get a kick out of the pictures and some of the stories from a classic time in NBA history. I kept thinking of my own kids and wondering if they would one day dream of being in the NBA or another type of high-profile profession. My personal hope is that they will dream of a life that matters for eternity, not just the here and now. As I read through parts of the book , I couldn't help thinking "Yeah, this is great for basketball, I suppose, but what about something that really lasts?"

So when they dream, I pray they dream big. Really Big. Here's a quote from Brennan Manning that captures it -

May all your expectations be frustrated,
May all of your plans be thwarted,
May all of your desires be withered into nothingness,
That you may experience the powerlessness and poverty of a child
And can sing and dance in the love of God,
Who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Memorial Day Weekend

I love her.
Classic.

Kalamazoo peeps - check out the t-shirt. Even though the 44 is long-since worn off the back, he's still showin' the love for ya'll.

Sporting the beach-blown hair look.

Her bathing suit reminds me of an orange creamsicle.

Ain't she somethin'??

Most of you have seen these on Facebook, but I hate to leave anyone out :)

Here's our official start to summer around here - being on Green Lake on Memorial Day Weekend!

Wedding Road Trip (without wedding pictures)

Last Saturday, C & S and Aaron & I drove down to Iowa for a co-worker's wedding. No kids allowed!! (Thanks, Granny!) My camera batteries died before I got any shots that had to do with the wedding, but I was still able to get these: Okay, a little explanation. Aaron accidently stepped on Syna's shades and broke them. He's wearing them in this shot. Nice. There's our buddy Nate on the left, Chris in the middle.

The four of us! It was a beautiful outdoor wedding under shady trees. I had my first Chipolte experience on this trip. I was a little like a deer in the headlights when it was my turn to order, but I got the Fajita Burrito, and it was a good pick. Did you know McDonalds owns Chipolte? Me either. Now you know.

Ah, that's better.

Me and The Man.

Other highlights of the trip...laughing at All About Steve with my sister-in-law....taking funny pictures of sleeping husbands in the car (don't you wish I'd posted THAT one!) Chips and salsa at a wedding reception - BRILLIANT!
